There is no town of Atalaya as such. Atalaya is an area situated on a part of the Costa del Sol known as The New Golden Mile. The New Golden Mile is the name given to the area between San Pedro del Alcantara and Estepona, in truth a marketing name inspired by the original Golden Mile, a stretch of almost 6.5 km of coast from the west edge of Marbella all the way to Puerto Banus. The New Golden Mile is made up of a number of communities with new developments that were built respecting the environment and not too close to the shore, thus making it a sought after area to buy property.
Atalaya is beautifully nestled on the boundaries of Marbella and Benahavis, mainly within the Estepona area, and it is split in two parts by the main road (N340 / A7). The beach side of Atalaya is known as Atalaya Baja and the upper side as Atalaya Alta or Atalaya Golf. Well known for the high level of residents, the area being rich both in apartment complexes and villas, Atalaya is also home to the popular golf course Atalaya Golf & Country Club, one of the oldest golf courses in Costa del Sol, with its hotel and various facilities. The golf course is located approximately halfway between Marbella and Estepona and in the same area as Gualdamina and Marbella Club Golf Resort. It consists of two 18-hole courses, the Old Course (1968) and the New Course (1990).
It is a well-established area with many older villas and apartment complexes now mixed with a choice of modern apartments and houses. All of the development has made it into a very desirable area, as the expansion and urbanisations are carefully monitored and planned, such that no high rise buildings are allowed to be constructed near shoreline with very few anywhere in sight.
